How to approach this topic
The form.
| Form | What it asks you to do first |
|---|---|
| A metaphor | Rewrite it as a plain claim before you plan |
The topic as a plain claim. Thinking starts only when an idea meets a challenge.
What the topic assumes. The word unless makes it an all-or-nothing claim. Test it. People do think alone, and the challenge can come from their own doubts. Your thesis can start there.
Four questions to ask before you plan.
- What does a challenger give a thinker that agreement cannot?
- Can a person think well alone? What plays the opposite team then?
- Which Indian traditions and institutions built opposition into decision-making?
- When does opposition stop helping thought and become a contest to win?
Mistakes to avoid.
| Mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Writing about sport | Use the game only to set up the plain claim |
| Agreeing with unless all the way | Show a case where thinking began alone |
| Only Western examples | Use Indian debate traditions and institutions too |
| Ending on "dialogue is important" | End on what institutions should do to protect dissent |
A model plan
Thesis. Thinking grows sharper when it meets a challenge, and institutions that keep a challenger in play decide better. The challenger can be one's own doubt. Opposition played only to win does not improve anyone's thinking.
| Paragraph | Point | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Introduction | A long argument that ended in a workable answer. State the thesis | The Constituent Assembly's debate on the official language, settled by the Munshi-Ayyangar formula in 1949 |
| 2. Challenge tests ideas | An idea that cannot be challenged cannot be improved | Karl Popper's test of falsifiability. Peer review in science |
| 3. India's tradition of argument | Indian thought made debate a method | Rules of debate in Nyaya philosophy. Akbar's Ibadat Khana (1575). Amartya Sen, The Argumentative Indian (2005) |
| 4. Democracy keeps an opposite team | Parliament and courts build in opposition | Question Hour. Justice H.R. Khanna's dissent in ADM Jabalpur (1976), endorsed by the Supreme Court in the Puttaswamy judgment (2017) |
| 5. The case against | Some thinking starts in solitude | Ramanujan's notebooks. Newton's work during the plague years of 1665 and 1666 |
| 6. The challenger inside | A good solitary thinker argues with himself | Writing objections in the margin. A scientist trying to disprove her own result |
| 7. When the game is only about winning | Opposition without listening stops thought | Shouting matches on television. Social media feeds that show each side only its own view |
Conclusion. Return to the Constituent Assembly. Say what should happen next. Protect time for debate in legislatures, and teach structured argument in schools.
