PSLE Comprehension Cloze Practice (with answers and reasons)

How to use this page: work through the ideas below, then open a practice set and attempt every blank before you reveal any answer.

Comprehension Cloze is the section that trips up strong readers who guess. Each blank has one best answer, and the clue is almost always in the words around it. In the real PSLE (Paper 2, Booklet B), there are no answer options given: you write one word per blank from context. These practice passages work the same way, so attempt first, then check the answer and the reason.

Verify the format

Format details reflect public 2026 sources: comprehension cloze is a single passage of 15 blanks (15 marks), with no word bank, so you supply each word yourself. Confirm against the official SEAB PSLE English syllabus before relying on any specific point.

The one skill that raises cloze scores

Read the whole sentence, often the whole paragraph, before filling a blank. The answer is decided by context: a linking word before it, an example after it, or the tense of the surrounding verbs. A child who fills blanks left-to-right without reading ahead will lose marks they could easily keep.

Our answer keys name the clue every time, so your child starts to see those signals for themselves.

How the answer keys work

For each blank we give the answer and the reason. For example:

Blank (3): because. The clue is cause-and-effect: the sentence explains why the plants died, so a reason word fits.

That "reason" line is the whole point. Copying the answer teaches nothing; understanding the clue transfers to the real exam.

Practice sets

How to use these with your child

  1. Attempt the whole passage first, keeping the reveals closed.
  2. Mark it together, but for every blank, ask "what in the sentence told you?" before revealing the reason.
  3. Focus on the ones they missed: almost always, they filled the blank without reading past it.
